Sharing this because I know I'm not the only person who uses Instacart for grocery delivery:

Am I the last person to learn that along with the fees per order & monthly / annual fees there is a 'hidden' charge by Instacart in that the individual items are charged higher than in the store?

I've been using IC over a year and a week ago had the first (or so I discovered) over charge (was charged for Six 6-pk cokes instead of the One 6-pk ordered & received. It was a fluke that I even caught it.

But - because of that - I compared the actual store receipt (which, I've NEVER been given before by the delivery person) to an order I received yesterday.

When I noticed the difference (the receipt was nearly $10 less than the subtotal on my account before the delivery fee & tip) I phoned IC.

The customer service rep said it's a price the store sets.

I don't get it. The store didn't get the money - they did (IC).

So I'm sure that this has gone on ever since I started using IC ... but it felt like trickery. It's not setting well. I'd rather see the variance in the actual FEE than the weird over pricing per item.

Anyway - it's food related. So I'm sharing this FYI.

Bella, I adore your posts food related or not. I noticed the difference in price when I looked into IC. I'd rather go in and get what I need.

Thanks Tata. I posted this online in one of their forums and discovered I'm apparently a moron for not realizing this going in. Blasted a bit that Probably got that shopper 'fired' as they are instructed to NOT give the receipt to the buyer for that reason. Ridiculed 'that's how they make their money.' Make no mistake - I'm all for capitalism & businesses making a profit. I just feel the 'fee' should be higher for transparency. Anyway. That's all. Thanks again.

I haven’t ever used IC, but I noticed that when I get a delivery from Walmart that the prices are slightly higher than what I pay in store. Add to that the shipping cost and it’s more affordable to just drive the 4 miles to go get what I need. A local grocery store offers pickup, but it’s$5-10 per order, the prices are higher than in store and they are always out of what I want. They try to push generics over name brand a lot. Plus they won’t have my order ready for at least a week because they only allow one pickup per hour from 9-5 M-F. That’s not very many pickup orders in a town of 50-60k people. Mostly I just go to the store or shop Amazon. With Amazon I have prime and I know things will be a little higher but I can have most things in 2 days.

I've been using Instacart for about two years and I've always been aware that the prices are higher than in-store. They tell you so somewhere, maybe When you first sign up or something. And when you get meat and the store price is on the package and that's different from what you're charged. Also it varies from store to store. So, for me, what it boils down to, is whether or not it's worth it to me. And I'm old and I'm fat and I don't walk very well and I don't like hauling groceries in the heat, so, for me, yes it's worth it. Especially right now, when I don't want to get out and go shopping; I feel safer having things delivered. Sorry you weren't aware of the extra costs, it must have been quite a shock.

I definitely feel it's worth it & always wondered 'how' they made their money. I'm on board now.

It's something like $1-3 per item for Costco stuff. Higher here in CA because the shoppers also get paid an hourly wage. Worth it to me and I'm tipping generously right now because I feel like they're doing a job for me and it's something that I can still do to put money directly in people's pockets rather than donating. I was giving them cash initially, but I haven't been to an ATM lately.

Instacart clearly discloses on the Web site that prices are higher than in-store.
