"Grandma Moses" was a renowned American folk artist often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age.

Well, Mrs. Moses, you should rest peacefully knowing your legend remains untouched by me. For now.

My 'art thing' was last night and except for my complete lack of talent, technique and patience, it went pretty darn well. It was the first time I ever picked up a paintbrush but I enjoyed playing with brush strokes and mixing colors. Once I was able to 'let go' I liked it. I was lost following the artist the whole time but whenever I felt my frustration bubble I'd exhale and stir more paint until I relaxed again.

My finished product is a weird hot mess but I'm already thinking of how to do it over with a different brush stroke technique now that it sort of 'clicked' together in my head. I can envision the colors and direction I want to try and would like to see if I can translate that to canvas. The battle on whether to 'order art stuff today or wait for another class' is the voices arguing whether it's just another form of my compulsive bingeing or if it's opening another door to the new me.

Another interesting recognition was not once did I think about food, eating or weight loss the entire time. It was kind of like being at a casino; hypnotized and zoned out by the pretty colors just not as expensive and no one was smoking around me.

Wild coincidence or complete irony ~ the organizer wanted to take pictures of the people there and asked 'is anyone here in the Witness Protection Program?' Yes, she used that phrasing and looked directly at me! I couldn't help but instinctively pull the brim of my cap down lower over my eyes as I smiled. So either she's part of the FS community too and was fishing or shoot... freaky, huh?

And in the spirit of small towns and everyone knowing everyone ~ one of my local nemisis was there! Yikes. Who woulda thunk it? I think he was there because his girlfriend (or daughter ~ because she sure did look young to be his girlfriend) is the 'artist' but he painted too and we both behaved ourselves. We sacrificed our feud for the sake of art, LOL.

Well, I'm going to go read y'alls journals and see what you're up to today. Thank you for reading.

Bella

Well...bingeing on creating artwork never made anyone fat, bloated, puffy or nauseous. There truly are much worse things you could overdo on that would cause you a lot more physical and emotional discomfort! When I'm sewing I do NOT think about food, at all (and besides, it gets on whatever you're sewing no matter how careful you try to be). Engaging the brain in other things can set aside the compulsive urge to eat because of boredom.

Bella, the artist... I love it! And, I'd love to see some of your work, but I know I'm not technologically knowledgeable enough to post a picture here -- are you? I think you're on to something with taking up a new hobby that you love. I've been thinking about that myself, but trying to figure out what -- food, or should I say, hobby for thought. And, the WPP is alive & well in your home town -- go figure! xoxox

Colly & Angel - the bingeing on art, I know, is ok, but I have a compulsive personality period. In the past, give me a plant and by the end of the week my house looks like a jungle; give me a fish and here comes Seaworld. Working on my health right now involves more than weight loss and food it's recognizing the other compulsions I have (anger, depression, shopping, gambling, etc) and trying to keep my life in balance and moderation. No, I am not the greatest at posting photos either despite the many threads and advice; I may get a photo of my painting and upload it as my image for a few days if the WPP gives me permission, LOL.

Glad you enjoyed the the art class and that you got into the zone and didn't think about food. It obviously make an impression on you when you are thinking of other ways to do what you did last night. I laughed out loud at the witness protection thingie - life is full of irony isn't it? Who knows, you could be discovering a part of yourself that you hid beneath layers of 'whatever' all these years! And if you can afford the art supplies, I would say get them. Enjoy and thanks for always coming to visit my journal!

Releasing your inner artist can take some coaxing but it sounds like you've been inspired, which is great! LOL at the WPP comment. Too funny how life can have coincidences like that. Good job behaving yourself in the name of art ;)

I on embarked an art period in my 30's when I coerced a prof to let me into a competitive digital program at University. Me, without a lick of formal, disciplined training. Some scary times, but I held and aced the program , marrying my science knowledge with digital art. Made many friends, learned a boatload and am now at another place where creating art is innate. I commend and encourage your foray.

I am so glad that you tried something outside your comfort zone and that you enjoyed yourself. Quite a lesson in stepping outside of yourself. I have often wondered if I would have been a great (fill in the blank), but I just hadn't tried it. I think that is why I always encouraged my kids to try sports, music, acting, or whatever they chose - I wanted them to explore while they were young.

Sounds like the painting was a success if you enjoyed it and it kept your mind off the F word.. Anything that keeps us from thinking about that is great. Hope you have a good weekend Bella!!

cool! I was looking for a class like that since I have not an ounce of art tallent and I inherited fine brushes and a lot of fine tubes of paint from my artist dad. I look at them and don't even know what to do... hmmm. Get someone to ask him if he wants to put his daughers paintning on his refrigerator. hahaha...

Thanks everyone. It was interesting how 'pressured' I started feeling once I knew my stuff was in shipping; why do I do that to myself? Just like how I felt so hungry at first. There must be some 'panic' button that gets pushed whenever we think about doing something new and different. Weird. So I remembered to 'breathe' and if I don't do anything but listen to music and paint random strokes onto the canvas it'll be fine.
