That's a rotten desperate way to lose a couple ounces--just keeping it lite. Seriously, sorry to hear that this is necessary. I hope you've weighted all your options carefully, and have more than one professional opinion on the matter. Nevertheless, if it is meant to be I pray for a complete and speedy recovery.

My mother had almost all of her thyroid removed because of tumors on it. It seems to be very hard on her. One time the office called to see if she was okay because her thyroid level was at 93. She also became allergic to a lot of medication, and most thyroid medication, once they took it out. It just looks so hard, and since her thyroid is so high it's impossible for her to lose weight. And the hair loss with it being high. The mood swings can be severe. She has to take vitamins for calcium for the rest of her life since the parathyroid was taken out. I'm sorry this surgery is necessary for you. It's going to be tough, but stay strong.

I've never heard of it. When my thyroid was overactive they talked about removing the thyroid but I took medication instead and that worked. Hope everything goes well for you!

A very good friend had this procedure done about 20 years ago. She is doing great. Her meds are under control and she is slim. She does follow a good way of eating, but eats desserts and drinks wine. No hair loss and has lots of energy. She had the procedure in her 40's.

@Erquiaga the challenges of everyone being different, right? My mom got it done when she was about 42. Everything just went bad on hers. She even got paralyzed vocal cords because of it, they had to shock them to get them going again, but she still has a slightly paralyzed vocal cord.

I'm sorry. I have no knowledge about anything, but just wanted to say I am praying for you as you make difficult decisions and seek the best care you can. I have three siblings and my mom on thyroid meds, and my 17 year old son was just diagnosed with issues for which we are told by the children specialist will cause him to need medication the rest of his life. It is just tough... Hugs❤️

aamaddux, absolutely! Just wanted to show that other side. I imagine the surgery is much improved from 20 years ago. I am so sorry your mother has had so much difficulty.

Had thyroid removed in 90s. I've heard of parathyroid but never known anyone that had it removed. Just remember, it will take 6 weeks or so to get you regulated after removal so you will be tired and hormones will be out of whack. At least that was my experience. Be thinking of you!🙏💜

My parathyroid is sucking calcium from my bones so it’s got to go. And looking at that they found a spot on my thyroid all labs are fine thyroid wise just high calcium. They biopiced the spot and showed guestions. So they did a molecular study and not cancer but a gene in it showed it could become cancer by 50%. So he’s taking that side out. I love my doc. And all the docs I saw on the way to him. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes!!

You gave 4 parathyroids. I had the one that turned into a tumor removed. I have a small scar at the neck line. I felt so much better within hours of having it removed. Take calcium (tums) was recomnended by my surgeon. It takes a couple of weeks before your other parathyroids start working again. They go dormate when one goes out of whack. I was so happy to have tje surgery done. Maybe under for one hour and home within 3-4 hours. If you have felt miserable for awhile I am glad you are having it removed. Believe me you will feel much better. They say having a tumored parathyroid is a silent killer because it causes so much other issues. I am happy for you.
