Yepper - I’ll take the loss. When I saw the 206.2 on the scale yesterday my mind immediately leaped to a snarky comment of ‘well, I guess stew, cornbread with butter and birthday cake totals over 12,000 calories as there is no other explanation for this 3+ lb jump.

I guess I experienced the ‘carb water weight’ thing. I dunno. But I was back down, even lower this morning. And I had pizza yesterday so … yay.

I am beginning to think I have the metabolism of a bear based on Keyten’s explanation a few journals back. Winter seems to be my ‘season’ for weight loss. Even with the endless holiday food passing across my path.

NSV’s - had to move my car seat up a bit. Well, that could be a conflict… I immediately deduced my backside must have decreased but what if my legs just shrunk? I’m going to hold hope is the former not the latter.

And, another NSV, pulling on knee high boots. I never have a problem with boots FITTING at any weight - my legs never change despite my Mrs. Potato Head body. But a year ago I struggled to be able to lean over enough to get them on my feet (generally wearing slip on shoes only) and needed boot pulls. NOW I can use both hands and bring my knees up to my chest. So there’s that - and that’s a good thing.

Post Blondie Birthday Party wrap up topic: she was surprised and very happy. On the way to the hotel ((to check her room in before the party)) I stopped at Marshall’s to get her a ‘sleep mask’ (eye mask?) because I’d tried to hand sew one for her and that was a fail. While there I got a little carried away with adding body wash & lotion, fluffy socks, a candle, a gown and some other things. I checked into her room early so that I could set the room temperature and turn on the lights plus put her ‘Taz’ bag (previous journal) loaded with snacks on the bed (( along with the Marshalls haul)).

She was surprised at everything - the balloons, the cake (with Looney Toons Decorations) and of course her suite and the bags. I picked her up yesterday and we went for manicures, lunch and shopping. Then back to her suite for another night. She just posted on Facebook that I was the best Mom in the world. #Iagreehahaha

Lunch yesterday was good. Palio’s Pizza Kitchen - This was the nicest restaurant I’ve been in for a while and you know that from my bitchy journals that I’ve encountered some disappointments. The owner was friendly, they had a personal pan pizza, salad & beverage for less than $9. When I say ‘friendly’ it means he acted like he was glad to have the business rather than ‘doing us a favor to feed us’ as so many restaurants these days do. He even hugged me on the way out and I LET HIM (wide eyed shock from Blondie because I’m not a hugger).

About the purses & sewing in the previous journal - thank you all very much for the compliments. Everything I have done has been helped by following a YouTube tutorial. Some of you mentioned being inspired to sew again as well so here are the tutorials for those bags. The Taz tote was based on a tutorial from ‘SewSpire’ - The six pocket tote. The clutch was from Lorrie Nunemaker - also on YouTube - called ‘the Grab & Go’. I found another video tutorial this morning that has made two of the lined purse processes 100% easier and will be making one this evening. That person is ‘Owl be Sewing’ and I’m going to make the reversible bag.

I’m hungry but don’t know what I want - I’m going to go browse y’alls journals now to see what you’ve been up to. Thank you for stopping by.

Melissa, I've reached the point where I have tried to get out of the car without unbuckling the belt. I know that doesn't say much for my 'smarts' but it's an indication the strap is no longer choking me that I forget it's there.

Princess & Chris .. Awe.. but NO! Believe me .. other than the excessive gifting, being my kid is no walk in paradise. But if you're only in it for the gifts, come on! Bring your own bags tho - I never wrap gifts. Never.

Wifey - come on down. I am an excessive gifter. I don't receive very well ... it's something I'm trying to fix but I may be too late in life to change. I know it's something related to some things said to me as a child "why would THEY want to be YOUR friend" and "people only love you for your money" and stuff... I never feel as worthy of receiving gifts ~ I always want to go overboard reciprocating.

Liv - thank you. I cannot reinforce this enough to people.. the NSVS .. so much more important than that scale number although we are mostly slaves to it.

JC - thank you. I'm thinking I should get there by the end of January if I don't lose my way over the next couple of weeks.

Binky & Tom - yeah, it was frustrating to have to maneuver and position myself into an odd angle just to get my foot into the boot then use the pulls.. this is better. I do have issues with my hip & I'm still having problems with this damn knee despite the $$$$ I paid for diagnosis & treatment so that's troublesome. But this is some improvement.

Keyten - Bella Bear?? Haha. That must be it because nothing else has changed in my WOE or activity.

Kenna - I dunno - people have short memories. This one .. the suite I got her .. Cutty & I stayed there one weekend ourselves (it was the easiest way to get away without a long trip) and he had sent HER to check into the room for us (because I was still flying in from out of town & my broom hadn't landed yet). So as I was walking her through the suite she stopped and said, "Wait, I know this room" ... and started crying. She said she felt like her Dad was 'there' with her and celebrating her birthday with all of us. Which was why I chose that hotel & suite instead of anywhere else in town. So, yes, I hope she'll remember it.

Peep - I was thinking about that... I guess I have a question .. 'does FAT retain water or is it muscles ((that retain))?' Does this extreme a swing in one day mean I'm getting more muscular? I dunno, I don't even understand my question enough to write it. Thanks again everyone.

From what I’ve read and seen on tv, as fat shrinks it gains water so essentially stays the same until the whoosh when those cells let go of the water and die off. Muscle does hold water too. Which is it? Who knows. There are way more people here more qualified to answer than I.

In addition to water presence in depleted fat cells, I have read that glycogen stores with water, so, the more carbs we eat, the more water retention around the muscles where glycogen is stored from the glucose (carbs). 80% of your glycogen stores are around muscle tissue, the liver retains the other 20% of available glycogen. Carbs can effect water retention for sure.

Wow, Bella! You are adding one NSV after another! Congratulations! Also, I love all the details that you have prepared for your daughter's birthday. And that comment from her on FB is so sweet!

Bella that really made that wonderful gift to blonde special.

When carbs get broken down into glycogen, the body stores that glycogen by binding it to water. On average, 1 gram of carbs binds to (or holds onto) 3-4 grams of water. So you can see by eating more carbs than you usually do will make you retain water and raise the scale. This isn’t a bad thing, because going back to your average consumption of carbs will drop the water weight, or you can workout where this stored water 💦 and glycogen is really useful!

So yes Bella, eating more carbs than you usually do will result in water retention and a temporary scale increase. Combine those carbs with salt and the water retention increases. That is also why when people cut down on carbs ( usually at the beginning of a diet) they drop a large amount of weight. Sorry folks but that large amount of weight is mostly water ( some fat!lol) but mostly water. Less carbs eaten equals less water binding to it equals lower scale readings.

Good job, Bella! NSVs for you, happy daughter, all good! Kennyn27, good explanation of how carbs affect water weight. I would add: when eating low carb, the kidneys shed salt. Ultimately that's what causes "keto flu".

Peep, Fox, Dawg, Kenna, Eva, Kenny and GZ - thank you for the explanations. All of this science makes my thoughts swirl esp when combined with the 'drink as much water as possible' advice. I understand the ripple effect of it (pun intended) but can imagine for someone chained to the scale ONLY as a measuring device it can be frustrating. And, in an odd way, with my Eating Disorders and trying to be 'above board' with my 'healthy weight loss' approach I had to go thru a massive rationalization years ago about the water consumption. In a way (and I accept this is an f'd up way of thinking but that's what ED is ) to drink water when hungry felt like 'cheating'. But I finally understood that decreasing 'food consumption' connected to decreasing water consumption so THAT would result in being thirsty more often and the need to increase water consumption by drinking it as I was no longer getting as much from the (not consumed) food. Now, does this relate to the 'carbs cause water retention'? No, not directly. But when has that ever stopped me?
