Feeling full vs. not feeling hungry

During our daily 5k step walk my wife (who is mostly fasting but eats <200 calories of food every few days) talked about the difference between feeling full and the absence of hunger that you get from fasting. We agreed that the two are not the same thing.

We are long time Atkins dieters who know that you can eat high fat foods that make you feel full but still lose weight if you keep the carbs down. She does well on the diet but I end up cheating and eating too many carbs which causes a hunger spike which makes me REALLY hungry. My problem is that I want to feel "full", I NEED to feel "full" all the time.

I did this for decades. You can see 8 years of my history on this site.

Fasting has worked for me because it replaces "full" with "not hungry".

The problem with "not hungry" is that you miss the "pleasure" of eating. Rather than a bad thing, it causes me to reexamine my relationship with food. I can be grateful for the nourishment it provides, rather than demand that if TRY to "fill" my emotional holes.

I hope this will serve me when I reach my goal weight and enter weight maintenance. For now I am grateful for my 30 pounds of fat to burn so that I have time to work through my food issues.
