Day 2 of a planned 2 days of eating

Day 10 of 14 days of the "Challenge" with @SharonsVictory: No 'Binging' (more than 100 carbs) for two weeks

I did a 🏃🏾‍♂️ 5 mile run yesterday and kept my carbs below 100g. However, my protein was over 130g. I think if I kept them both below 100g I would not have had a gain.

Now, I am reducing my calories, however, I still had a MASSIVE calorie deficit (a 5 mile run in 90 degree heat at 8-9 minutes a mile will burn some calories), so this is further evidence that calories do not make me gain weight, macro nutrients do. No, I don’t believe it is all a gain in fat, it is certainly mostly a gain in water, but that water is related to glycogen.

When glucose goes up, glycogen goes up, and water goes up, and weight goes up.

For me, a person who is not Keto adapted (because I don’t stick to low carb long enough, and carb up every weekend), that 130g+ of protein will trigger insulin and be stored as fat or converted to glucose. Yeah there is a debate about this, with valid arguments (see: “At what rate does protein convert to glucose?” https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/comments/1e26y3/at_what_rate_does_protein_convert_to_glucose/), but, that protein has-to-go-somewhere…

Today is an eating day, and I will try to keep my carbs below 100g because of the “Challenge”. My protein will be high again, and I will probably gain weight. However, I plan to hit the 🏋🏾‍♂️ gym today and that usually helps keep the water gain down (30 minutes of heavy weightlifting will burn through glycogen like crazy).

Starting Monday it is back to the ‘no solid food fast’ and my #keto diet of less than 20 carbs a day…

😎 Life is Good! Have a great day everyone!

Good luck in the gym.

@Erquiaga - Thanks! I really want to see what happens at the end of the week. I suspect that my weight loss will be much slower because I wont have my usual huge water gain that is usually quickly lost.

@ liv001 - Thanks! I will try to lift 'hard and heavy'. I ate some Frosted Flakes last night to 'carb up' a bit. However, I had that 5 mile run yesterday and I may go into the gym still 'low' on glycogen. I will just have to see how it goes 😁

@ liv001 - That article I posted has a really good debate showing both sides of the 'excessive protein theory'. Reddit can sometimes have 'good discussions'. I remain in the 'no excessive protein camp' but, I fully concede the valid arguments that say 'it depends...'. Good for me because I can't seem to keep carbs and protein low at the same time without water fasting.

I do read reddit a bit and check in on their discussions. It is nice to see some debates sometimes. Yeah I lean on the protein is not a problem because I believe if you are using ketones the body is not going to shift to make sugar out of the extra proteins. There is no evidence that backs that up. But people often are not using ketones so then what happens and it is possible that some diabetics may also switch easier. Definitly a YMMW this one

@liv001 - I am convinced that gluconeogenesis is 'on demand' and can shut off by the body when not needed, so "58% of all excess protein is always converted to glucose" is definitely a 'misleading' (ok lets just call it incorrect or possibly wrong) statement. But I am usually in a 'low glycogen' state and I believe my body will fire up gluconeogenesis because it is always seeking 'equilibrium'. This is why I believe my body is effectively consuming the excess protein 'like carbs'. However, as always, only a 'theory' 😁
